The Mater Lakes wrestling team recently competed in the FHSAA 1A-District 15 Tournament this past Friday, February 16, 2018 at Monsignor Edward Pace High School in Miami, FL.
Out of the eight teams in the District the Bears finished runner up as a team, and crowned a program best five individual District champions. The Bears also qualified all twelve of their wrestlers to the Regional tournament this weekend at Cardinal Gibbons High School. These results mark the best season thus far for the Bears wrestling team.
Cole Schwartzberg (three time district champion), Rafael Alvarez, Steven Altamirano, Haniel Suris, and David Alvarez all claimed individual district titles. Omar Armengol placed second losing an extremely tight bout with state contender Darian Estevez from Somerset Academy Chapel Trail. Armengol and Estevez will likely meet in a highly anticipated Regional final matchup this weekend.
Justin Zerbinati also placed second in his first ever District tournament. Douglas Boutemy and Gonzalo Perez finished third. Dylan Lanning, Jorge Rodriguez, and Ethan Vergara all placed fourth to advance to the Regional tournament.
“I cannot wait to see the result for the Regional tournament because I know we will have several of our wrestlers place for state. We have five seniors on the team, and they will be greatly missed next season, but they have set a foundation for years to come at Mater Lakes,” exclaimed Coach Brandon Neifeld.
