Mater Lakes Wrestling Brings Home Five All-Americans

Mater Lakes Academy wrestling team competed in the AAU National Disney Team Duals at the ESPN Wide World of Sports on June 25th through the 28th.

The MLA Golden Bears wrestling club team competed at their first National tournament as a team this past June at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Disney. The tournament consisted of over 175 teams from all across the country, and it is considered one of the largest off season National team events. The Bears finished 3rd place with a 5-2 record in their pool and 6th place overall in their division with an overall record of 8-5.

Individually, there were wrestlers who achieved All-American status by losing no more than 1 match the entire tournament. Senior graduate Cole Schwartzberg led the team with an outstanding 12-0 record pinning every single opponent he faced. Incoming Senior Nicholas Luna finished 6-0 having his tournament cut short by an injury. Omar Armengol, Eric Temes, and Nestor Nunez all finished with an excellent 10-1 record achieving All American status. Senior graduate Haniel Suris finished with a Bronze level status finishing 4-2 with an injury cutting his tournament short. Incoming 8th grader Danny Martinez achieved a Copper level status finishing with a 9-3 record. Dylan Lanning finished with a 3-3 record also achieving a Copper status. Shane Cannon finished 4-1 also having his tournament end early. David Alvarez also performed well finishing with a 7-4 record. “There is no doubt that competing in this tournament has elevated our team to the next level. Traveling and competing together at a National tournament not only enhances our team comradery, but also forces our athletes to grow as individuals”, says head coach Brandon Neifeld.

The Bears will continue to train all summer as their program continues to grow and achieve success. “The addition of NCAA All American Coach JD Ramsey has had a huge impact on our team as well, we are all excited and have high expectations for next season” , says Neifeld.
