Academica sponsored the Charter Schools Student Taste Testing and Food Expo for the Lunch Consortium on Tuesday, February 6, 2018.  The event was a huge success and took place at Mater Gardens Charter School, where the Mater Gardens Student Council and Lighthouse Team were on hand to facilitate information to all the schools that partook in this unique experience.

Approximately 475 “official tasters”, from 22 schools in grades 4th-10th came to Mater Gardens to participate in a tasting of a variety of 44 new food items to be sampled for inclusion in next year’s school lunch.  Cheney Bros., the food distributor, brought over 16 food service companies and offered students delicious samples of lasagna, cheese bread with marinara sauce, boneless chicken wings, stir fry vegetables, burgers (veggie, meat and turkey) as well as yummy treats like ice cream bars, cookies and donuts.

Students were invited to evaluate a variety of innovative menu concepts and sample new flavors.  After completing their tasting, students used a Quick Response Code (QR code) to answer a survey and provide feedback on what they liked and disliked. The QR code is a barcode that is scanned using a smartphone to access the survey.  The Lunch Consortium then collected the opinions of the students electronically, which made the experience even more exciting for the students.  There were also paper surveys available for the students that wanted to write their answers.  This exercise was extremely helpful to assist the Lunch Consortium in designing a menu for the schools that will offer more choices for these students as well as improve the quality of the meals served at their schools.

There were picnic tables and music for entertainment and the students had a great time! Students from the City of Hialeah Educational Academy also did double duty as photographers and videographers of the event.

Mater Academy Middle High Charter school would like to congratulate eleven of our outstanding teachers for being a FLORIDA HIGH IMPACT TEACHER. An analysis was done on their former students’ performance on statewide standard assessments and found that these teachers had an impact on their student’s growth among the most positive in the state. Most importantly, the Department of Education’s analysis is based on a state-level value-added model (VAM), which is one part of an educator’s overall evaluation and the following teachers managed to qualify for this amazing achievement.

Mater Lakes Academy Student Wins MIAMI-DADE Silver Knight Award

Mater Lakes Academy Student Wins MIAMI-DADE Silver Knight Award

Miami, Florida, Thursday, May 19, 2016 – Three Mater Lakes Academy students were nominated for the Miami Herald’s Silver Knights Awards that were held on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at the James L. Knight Center.

One of the nominees, Sabrina Gonzalez, won the Silver Knights in the Vocational Technical category for Miami-Dade.

Sabrina is part of the Early Childhood Education program at Mater Lakes Academy, and grew very fond of a particular student and their family while he was part of “Cub Academy” (the on-site pre-school that is part of the early childhood curriculum). This student, who is autistic, was leaving the pre-school to attend another school for students with special needs, unfortunately the school was costing the parents several thousands and they were expecting twins. Knowing the struggles the parents were going through, Sabrina decided to start a non-profit, Heroes Miami, Inc. in August 2014, for families that have children with autism to assist them financially to cover some of the expenses that cannot afford. Through her non-profit Sabrina has raised over $7,000 and has held several fundraising events.

Sabrina is not only graduating with honors as a Summa Cum Laude graduate in June, but with her Associates in Arts from Miami-Dade College as part of the Dual Enrollment program and with the CDA certification as part of the Early Childhood Education program. Sabrina has done all this while being the President of Class of 2016 and involved in several organizations on campus including the Key Club and the National Honor Society. Sabrina will be attending the University of Florida Fall 2016.
