Entrenched between the working class communities of Hialeah and Hialeah Gardens, Mater Academy Middle/ High School is helping students achieve their dreams. For the majority of students at Mater, English is their second language. Yet, these students are defying the myth that ethnicity and socioeconomic status are roadblocks to success.

At Mater, sixth graders are told from day one that they must graduate and they must attend college. Nothing less is acceptable. Seventy percent of eighth graders complete one or more high school credit by the time they finish middle school and approximately 36% of high school students participate in dual enrollment annually. As a result of this aggressive college preparatory program, 234 Mater graduates have earned Associates of Arts degrees by the end of their senior year in high school.

The National Association of Secondary School Principals and the MetLife Foundation have recognized the middle school as a “Breakthrough School” for its successful practices in helping underserved students achieve equitable access to higher education. In 2011, the high school received the “Inspiration Award” by the CollegeBoard for being among the top three most inspiring school in America. Nationally ranked as one of the “Best High Schools in America” in U.S. News and World Report, Newsweek Magazine and The Washington Post publications, the high school is also on The Daily Beast’s Top 25 List for Schools “Doing the Most with the Least.” Both Mater Middle and Mater High have achieved an “A” grade from the Florida Department of Education consecutively over the past seven years. Both schools have also been designated “Springboard National Demonstration Schools” by the CollegeBoard.
